Jayant Murthy Says

I am in Bangladesh to Understand to Technology Trend Here

Intel Corporation is delivering four new processors, formerly codenamed Prescott, that are built on the company’s industry-leading, high-volume 90-nanometer (nm) manufacturing technology. These processors are among six new offerings in Intel’s line of desktop chips, bringing new features and high performance to a wide range of PC users, from mainstream consumers and business people to gaming enthusiasts and computer power users. “This new manufacturing technology, along with numerous architectural enhancements, enable us to continue delivering products that allow end users to interact with a wide variety of digital devices” said Jayant Murty, Director Marketing Intel Technology, South Asia.

He also said that Intel’s 90 nm (a nanometer is one-billionth of a meter) process technology is the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process in the industry, built exclusively on 300 mm wafers, This new process combines high performance, low-power transistors, strained silicon, high-speed copper interconnects and a new Low-k dielectric material. This is the first time all of these technologies have been integrated into a single manufacturing process. He informed us that Intel’s family of Intel Pentium 4 processors supporting HT Technology provide home, and business users a great computing experience by keeping the PC responsive while processing other tasks in the background.

In addition to the four processors manufactured on the 90-nm process, Intel added a 3.40 GHz version of the Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting HT Technology based on Intel’s 0,13-micron process technology to its desktop processor family.

While he was at Dhaka. We, Editor in-charge Golap Montr, Associate Editor Main Uddin Mahmood and Assistant Editor M. A. Haque Anu talked to him on various issues related to ICT and about the products and technologies from Intel.

Computer Jagat: Is it your Erst visit to Bangladesh? What is the aim of your present visit?

Jayant Murthy: Yes, it is my first visit to Bangladesh and I hope definitely it will not be the last. The aim of my present visit is to meet our channel partners, the Government officials, and other concerned people here to understand the present technology trend in Bangladesh. I am also here to disseminate information about our company’s technology and get   directly   in   touch   with   the journalists in Bangladesh.

Jagat: The Itanium-2 processor is costlier than that of the Opteron. Not only that, Opteron gives excellent performance in 32 and 64 bit, while Itanium is yet to give good performance in 32 bit. In this perspective, does Intel have any future plan regarding Itanium processor?

Jayant Murthy: The Itanium-2 is mainly a server-based processor and it gives excellent performance in 64 bit environment. In 64 bit applications the Itanium-2 gives superior performance compared to the Opteron. If you visit 3rd party websites like TPCC you will see the great performance the Itanium-2 delivers in 64 bit. With Itanium-2 our objective is server performance not desktop performance. Moreover, there is not sufficient number of 64 bit applications for desktop.

Jagat: When will Intel introduce motherboards with chipsets supporting the PCI express slot which is expected to replace the AGP slot found in current motherboards?

Jayant Murthy: We hope that it will be available in the market in the second half of the current year.

Jagat: The present Xeon processor is of 533 MHz Bus speed, while Pentium-4 is of 800 MHz Bus speed. Why is that and will Intel upgrade its Xeon processor to 800 MHz?

Murty: We should keep in mind that the Intel Xeon processor is a sever processor, while the Intel Pentium-4 processor is desktop processor. These two processors have different tasks to do, and serve fundamentally different programs. At present the Intel Xeon processors have a 533 MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) and give excellent performance with the current architecture. Future change in the platform will be made according to the needs of our customers.

Jagat: AMD is claiming that their processors are the fastest processors in the market What will be the plan for Intel in that case?

Jayant Murthy: Anyone     can     claim anything,   but   the   truth   always remains the truth. The truth is that Intel produces the processor with the highest performance – as far as the  Intel Pentium 4 Processor Extreme Edition is concerned, it is the fastest   : processor in the market. And besides ! claims from the companies, the user  can also rightly    judge which processor is the fastest processor in the market.

Jagat: It is being heard that the Intel is going to introduce mode! numbers in their processors. What is the inherent cause behind it?

Jayant Murthy: We are going to introduce model numbers for Intel processor so

that the buyers can easily identify the specific  product  by  kt model numbers.

Jagat: Prescott is the Intel’s 3rd generation Pentium-4 core. The 90 nanometer process technology is being used in Prescott instead of 130 nanometer process technology of Northwood (Intel’s 2nd generation Pentium 4 core), and so more chips can be made out of the same wafer. So the question may arise, will your company take any initiative to lower the price?

Jayant Murthy: The price is always changing with the change of technology, and the price is not directly related to the nanometer. So the question will not arise here to lower die price due to change in process technology. And if you look at our products you will see thai the users are continuously getting more performance as we are always improving our technology.

Jagat: Intel plans to roll out a chip based on a technology called WiMax that could be used to deliver high speed wireless internet access ; throughout a small city. In this point of view what will be the future ! prospects of WiMax in Bangladesh?

Jayant Murthy: Intel’s technology WiMax is expected to deliver high speed net in access within 30 miles of I transmission point. The wireless i technology is similar to Wi-Fi. The i difference is that while Wi-Fi’s range is 200 feet, WIMax’s range extends to 30 miles. In Bangladesh a company could put a WiMax node on an existing cellular tower and make I service available throughout the city.  In this regard WiMax could be very much cost effective to deliver high speed internet access. Specially in remote areas where laying cable is difficult. WiMax can be a very cost effective and practical solution. So there is no doubt that WiMax has bright prospects in Bangladesh.

Jagat: The companies like HP, Microsoft and Intel are contributing to the social development fields i around the globe. Has Intel any plan of this sort in Bangladesh?

Jayant Murthy: I am not actually sure of what Microsoft does. We are talking to your government and other concerned people and then we will define our future direction. But in that case, you should know that social development means a lot of things! It  has a wide perspective too.
