Apple Safari 5 released

Apple has quietly released the next version of Safari (version 5.0) web browser for Mac and Windows platforms. The most important changes that Safari 5.0 brings are the HTML5 and the extensions support. Apart from that, the browser also offers the option to make Bing as the default search engine.

Apple claims that Safari 5.0 is faster than Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox. Safari 5.0 for Mac is powered with Nitro JavaScript engine that makes JavaScript run 30 percent faster than Safari 4 browser. Safari 5.0 is boasted to be twice as fast as Firefox and three percent faster than Google Chrome 5. Apple uses the Domain Name System prefetching of previously viewed web pages to make them load faster.

The new Safari 5 supports dozens of new web technologies like HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, also allowing developers to create rich-media experiences. Safari also brings full screen play back and closed captions for HTML5 Video, HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 forms validation, and several other features.

Apple has also introduced new free Safari Developer Program under which developers can build extensions using standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript for enhancing the Safari 5 web browser. New Extension builder in Safari 5 works like a sandbox for the extensions that get digitally signed Apple certificate and runs only from web browser.
