Apple has quietly released the next version of Safari (version 5.0) web browser for Mac and Windows platforms. The most important changes that Safari 5.0 brings are the HTML5 and the extensions support. Apart from that, the browser also offers the option to make Bing as the default search engine.

Apple claims that Safari 5.0 is faster than Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox. Safari 5.0 for Mac is powered with Nitro JavaScript engine that makes JavaScript run 30 percent faster than Safari 4 browser. Safari 5.0 is boasted to be twice as fast as Firefox and three percent faster than Google Chrome 5. Apple uses the Domain Name System prefetching of previously viewed web pages to make them load faster.

The new Safari 5 supports dozens of new web technologies like HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, also allowing developers to create rich-media experiences. Safari also brings full screen play back and closed captions for HTML5 Video, HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 forms validation, and several other features.

Apple has also introduced new free Safari Developer Program under which developers can build extensions using standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript for enhancing the Safari 5 web browser. New Extension builder in Safari 5 works like a sandbox for the extensions that get digitally signed Apple certificate and runs only from web browser.

Monday’s debut of Apple’s Safari 5 Web browser was one of the Worldwide Developers Conference rumors that preceded the event over the weekend, and it surprised many Steve Jobs prognosticators that he left the stage without announcing it. Then came an Apple press release on PRNewswire.com, but no browser. Then the press release disappeared, apparently a second stumble following a rare trip-up for Steve Jobs’ tightly controlled message machine during the iPhone 4 announcement, and shortly after that the browser made its debut.

Available for Windows and Mac, Safari 5 includes several new features and performance enhancements, the biggest of which has been announced but not activated. The new Safari Developer Program marks the advent of digitally signed add-ons for Safari.

The new Reader feature in Safari streamlines both single and multi-page stories into a more legible format.

Currently, only Safari for Mac supports add-ons, but the implication from the Safari Web site is that the new extension format will be cross-platform because they will be built on HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Apple is clearly trying to get some of their newly re-christened iOS mojo to rub off on the desktop Safari since the new add-ons will be “sandboxed, signed with a digital certificate from Apple and run solely in the browser,” according to the pulled Safari 5 press release.

Given the language used to describe the program and Apple’s controlled iOS marketplace, the Safari Extensions so far sounds like an attempt to extend the iOS’s philosophy to the browser, although it could wind up being nothing more than the Safari version of Mozilla add-ons site.

Safari 5 also includes Safari Reader for streamlining articles, a new add-on network, dramatic performance improvements, and support for Bing search. Safari Reader is designed to streamline the browser to maximize reading space when viewing single and multipage articles. A new Reader icon in the location bar will toggle the feature, and there are mouse-over options to enlarge the story, print it, or share it via e-mail.

HTML5 support in the new version of Safari doesn’t do any major trailblazing, although it does add significant support for the next generation of HTML code. Safari now supports HTML5-based full-screen video playback, video closed captioning, geolocation, drag and drop, forms validation, HTML5 Ruby, EventSource, and WebSocket. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera all support these features either in their stable releases or in generally functional development versions, leaving Internet Explorer with support only in IE 9′s stripped-down pre-alpha builds.

Apple is claiming major improvements to Safari’s JavaScript engine Nitro, with the version in Safari 5 running 30 percent faster than Safari 4. Apple says it also benchmarked Safari 5 to be twice as fast as Firefox 3.6, and 3 percent faster than Chrome 5.0. Safari 5 also loads Web pages faster by using DNS prefetching.

Apple has announced its WorldScript technology. The introduction of WorldScript will transform the Mac into the first international PC through worldwide language support.

The new technology includes support for text input and display, as well as for incorporating language attributes, such as date and time formats, for most written languages.

With WorldScript, Apple provides built-in support to handle the complexities of non-Roman languages. This includes system-level support of two-byte languages such as Japanese, Chinese and Korean, and one-byte languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.

Integrating this enabling technology into System 7 allows the Mac to be quickly localized for any language. Integration of language will enable third party software developers to develop and localize applications for markets throughout the world.

The belief that computers regardless of their make, can share the same programs, came one step closer to reality, when IBM, Apple, and Motorola dedicated a new design and development facility. The 80,000 sq. ft., S500 million design centre, named Somerset, will employ 300 engineers from the three companies. These scientists will endeavor to bring the Power PC single-chip reduced instruction-set computing (RISC) microprocessors to computers ranging from notebooks to sophisticated supercomputers.

Power (Performance optimization with enhanced RISC) PC is the hardware component of IBM and Apple’s plan for network operability between OS/2, IBM AIX and the Apple Macintosh. PowerPC is anticipated to create a profound transformation in the way PC are used. Initial use of PowerPC-based systems is expected to be in embedded control for automotive and consumer products use, portable and desktop computers high-end fault tolerant systems, and supercomputers.

Motorola will aid in designing, manufacturing and marketing the technology, which will be available to other manufacturers besides IBM and Apple. The three companies have decided to base PowerPC on the IBM architecture because of its capabilities and the size of the installed base.

The architecture specification have been completed, development of microprocessor has already started and the first systems are expected to be available next year. It seems the day is not far off when the same program can be run on different brands of computers easily.

IBM and Apple Computer Inc’s first PowerPC-based system will be priced under US$2,000 to compete with 386SX machines, officials from both companies and Motorola Inc revealed.

The system, a low-end desktop expected as soon as early 1993, will offer about 20 SPECmarks in performance, said officials from the three com-paines, speaking at the fourth annual Microprocessor Forum here.

“We expect the first products to compete with the 386SX-lcvcl products — offering those price points but much better performance,” said Eric Harslcm, vice-president of Apple’s desktop product division.

The current road map calls for the PowerPC—a single-chip implementation of IBM’s RS/6000 CPU— to be ready “in the second half of 1992,” said Lcs Crudele, general manager of Motorola’s RISC microprocessor division, which is working on the chips with IBM.

By 1993, PowerPCs will be available for portable and “mainstream” PCs, Crudclc said. These chips will offer performance of about 20 and 70 SPECmarks, respectively. In 1994, PowerPCs will be available for high-end workstaions and servers, offering up to 200 SPECmarks of performance.

By comparison, Sun Microsystems Inc’s $15,495 40MFL SPARCslation 2 processes 24.7 SPECmarks.

In addition to unveiling details of the PowerPC, Phil Hester, vice-president of IBM’s Advanced Workstaion Division, said the group is considering Porting its PowcrOpcn environment to the Intel platform. Hester also said the group next year will build a reference design to enable other firms to design PowerPC-based systems.

“This is not a three-person club,” he said. “We fully expect to have other manufacturers participating by early next year.”

Forum attendees were surprised at the level of redesign that the group is planning. “It’s clear that PowerPC is designed to do more than just fill out IBM’s current RS/6000 line — it’s a whole new platform,” said George White, president of Corollary Inc, a multiprocessing design firm.

Other announcements at the Microprocessor Forum included the following:

* Officials from Texas Instruments Inc confirmed thai the firm’s “Viking” Super -SPARC processor has been delivered to Sun. The new chip will deliver ” up to three times the perform anccof SPARCstation 2,” they said.

* Motorola unveiled its new 88110 Symmetric Superscalar RISC chip for workstations and high-end peripherals. It supports 3-D color graphics and two levels of cache.

* Advanced Micro Devices Inc announced the 29200, a single-chip processor for laser printers designed to compete with Intel Corp’s i960 processor. It processes 7 mips. Samples arc due in the first quarter, said officials. ? . Vancc McCarthy
