Nokia has developed Terminal Mode, which promises a wealth of possibilities for its users through seamless integration of mobile phone and car. This means that with Terminal Mode, it is possible to drive, tweet and talk simultaneously and safely.

Terminal Mode removes barriers for users, enabling them to run their chosen smartphone applications in their car’s built-in interface. With Terminal Mode, the mobile device’s applications are presented on the vehicle’s screen, and applications are controlled via the vehicle HMI (human-machine interface), making it possible to use mobile applications while still keeping an eye on the road.

This will extend the capabilities of the in-car infotainment and enhance the safe usability of the mobile device while operated in the car. The integration between mobile device and automobile is transparent, protocol-invariant and standardized.

Terminal Mode is also a catalyst for new services, generating opportunities for developers to create new multi-platform applications. One may look forward to various new applications, along with older applications updated for this new technology. For example, the popular weather widget and most evidently Ovi Maps are two existing applications which would both be cornerstone applications used in cars.

Terminal Mode, which has been developed by Nokia in close collaboration with CE4A is an industry standard open for all. This means that the technology has been developed with joint understanding that the resulting specification is open to everybody. The standard has already been endorsed by a number of tier-1 manufacturers and Nokia has already started discussions with a number of other handset vendors as well.

Vesa Luiro, Director, Automotive at Nokia reinforces that Terminal Mode could be one of many ways we’ll see Ovi services move into our cars, “Nokia continues to experience strong demand for the mobile applications available via Ovi. Our goal is to connect people to what matters most to them. To do that, we are exploring how we might better connect consumers to Ovi services and applications while they are inside a car.”

About Nokia

At Nokia, we are committed to connecting people. We combine advanced technology with personalized services that enable people to stay close to what matters to them. Every day, more than 1.2 billion people connect to one another with a Nokia device – from mobile phones to advanced smartphones and high-performance mobile computers. Today, Nokia is integrating its devices with innovative services through Ovi (www.ovi.com), including music, maps, apps, email and more. Nokia’s NAVTEQ is a leader in comprehensive digital mapping and navigation services, while Nokia Siemens Networks provides equipment, services and solutions for communications networks globally.

Nokia has unveiled its latest green initiative in launching new Eco Profiles. From now on, every new device will have an eco profile that includes information on the device’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Over the year, Nokia has south to ensure that each handset is created with the environment in mind.

Nokia has been providing eco declarations on all of its products since 2001, including basic information on the environment attributes of the product voerign material use, energy efficiency, packaging; disassemble and recycling.

from now on, Eco profiles will include the environmental impact of phones throughout their life-cycle; from their manufacture, throughout their use and finally, their recycling. Within profiles there’s also specific information on the environmental features of the device. New Eco profiles are already available for the recently launched x2, c3 and c6 products. Consumers can go to www.nokia.com site and search under the environment tab for Eco profile of their phone.

Over the past 10 years, Nokia has managed to reduce its devices’ environmental impact up to 65%, while keeping up with the times and launching feature-packed phones.

Currently, 100 percent of the materials in your Nokia phone can be recovered and used to make new products or generate energy, so nothing goes to waste; since 2006 all new devices, chargers and headsets have been free of PVC and since 2009, brominates and chlorinated compounds and antimony trioxide have been phased out. All new smartphones already have a power-saving mode and many also have ambient light sensors, as well as high-efficiency chargers that have reduced the no-load energy consumption by 80-95 percent.

Caring about the environment can mean looking at the way we live our everyday lives and the things we use on a daily basis. More than a billion of us use a Nokia very day. We use our scale for good by offering sustainable products across the whole portfolio, advocating sustainable choices with mobile service and ensuring a world-class global take-back program. We call it the power of we:- a billion people using our devices to connect and work together in different ways to protect the environment. Together we can make a real difference. Every journey starts with a small steps, and every small step matters.

Sustainability is at the heat of everything we do a Nokia: in our day-to-day routines, at our offers and factories. Our environmental works at Nokia is based on life cycle thinking. We look for possibilities to reduce the environmental impact or our devices and our own operations at each stage of the product life cycle.

Our engineers are continuously working to make our products more and more energy efficient. And our designers develop creative solutions, helping phone owners to use their devices in an eco-friendly way.

Our phones have a power-saving standby mode. over the last decade we’ve reduced the amount of energy our best in class charges use in no-load mode by 95 percent. in May 2009 we become the first mobile manufacture to put alerts into phones encouraging people to unplug their charges. we began eith three new mass market phones and the alerts will be rolled out across the product range.

In manufacturing, our sourcing managers are in constant dialogue with supplying materials. by reducing the size of the packaging , we were able to cut down the use of paper-based material by 100,000 tons, take every second truck transporting our products off the road, and save 500 million Euros in only tow years – so, it’s easy to see that taking the environment into account also makes good business sense! From august 2008 the sales packages of all new devices have been smaller than their earlier equivalents. And we keep making them smaller. The materials we choose for our packaging are selected to offer the best, most beautiful and most protective solution with latest environment impact. More than 95% of our packaging is made from renewable, paper-based materials, of which up to 60% is recycled content. And when plastic is used, we are able to include up to 90% recycled content. We are constantly working with our supplies to increase the amount of recycled content in our packaging. All our packaging is 100% recyclable.

We’re also very proud of the fact that all of the materials in your Nokia phone can be used again for new products or to generate energy, so nothing goes to waste.

As a result of this, the environment footprint of a typical Nokia mobile is the same as driving 170km with a hybrid car. so if you’re looking for an eco-friendly Nokia device, there’s no need to look for one with a green sticker: all Nokia phones come with eco improvements, and we’re working continually to make them even greener.

We operate the largest voluntary mobile phone recycling scheme in the world. People can bring their phones back for responsible recycling to around 5,000 Nokia Care Points locates in 85 countries.

we have also introduced a number of environmental servies to make sustainable choices easy for consumers, for example;

Green Explorer widget for sustainable lifestyle

we: offsetting the CO2 caused by flying

Eco zone for tips, links and content, environmentally themed wallpapers and ring tones.

A love of pop and classical music is partly in our genes

London, UK – If you’ve ever wondered why a close group of friends
might like completely different types of music, blame their genes. A
study by Nokia into the musical tastes of nearly 4,000 twins reveals
genetic influences on the music people like varies with genre.

While, on the whole, musical taste is determined just as much by
nature as it is by specific individual experiences, nature’s
influence is strongest on appreciation of pop, classical and hip-hop
music – indicating some people may be born to love Michael Jackson,
Beethoven or Jay-Z.

Nature’s influence is lowest on appreciation of folk and country,
where family upbringing appears to play a role – so a CD collection
full of Hank Williams, Dolly Parton and Joni Mitchell can’t
necessarily be blamed on genetics:

+————————————————+
| Genre | Nature’s Influence |
|—————————+——————–|
| Pop/classical/rap/hip-hop | 53% |
|—————————+——————–|
| Jazz/blues/soul | 46% |
|—————————+——————–|
| Rock/indie/heavy metal | 40% |
|—————————+——————–|
| Country/folk | 24% |
+————————————————+

The study, conducted by Nokia and Kings’ College London Department of
Twin Research, investigated the listening habits of nearly 4,000
twins and looked at the influence of both genetic and environmental
factors on musical taste.

“Previous studies have shown that perfect pitch ability appears to be
partly inherent and with as much as 50% of our musical taste being
predetermined, it appears there is a strong argument for the
existence of ‘music genes’” says Adrian North, Professor of
Psychology at Heriot Watt University.

As might be expected, genetic influences decrease over time as
individual experiences becomes more important. Excluding country
music – on average for the under 50s, genes have more influence
(55%)1 than environmental factors (45%)2 , whereas for the over 50s,
the influence of individual specific environmental factors on a music
collection increases to 60%3.

Liz Schimel from Nokia commented; “Mobile phones are changing the way
people experience music and, if we’re to give music fans the music
they want, we need to know what fuels their passions. While
technology doesn’t yet allow us to match DNA to playlists with Nokia
Comes With Music service and millions of tracks in the Nokia Music
Store, there’s something for every gene.”

Genetic influence ranking by genre for under and over 50s

Under 50s
- 56% Jazz/blues/soul
- 55% Pop/classical/rap/hip-hop
- 53% Rock/indie/heavy metal
- 0% Country/folk

Over 50s
- 43% Pop/classical/rap/hip-hop
- 42% Jazz/blues/soul
- 34% Rock/indie/heavy metal
- 28% Country/folk

Born to buy music, but not to listen to it

While genetic influence on the music we like (55%) is clear, genes
have a significantly lower influence (25%) on our motivations for
listening to music. According to the research, listening habits are
influenced by a desire to soundtrack our day, wanting to set a mood,
or simply to enjoy the listening experience rather than any ‘play
music now’ gene.

Notes to Editors
The research was conducted amongst identical (MZ) twins and fraternal
(DZ) twins. MZ twins share 100% the same genes, whereas DZ twins
share half the same genes, just like ordinary siblings. Assuming the
shared environment they grew up in is equally similar for MZ and DZ
twins, it is possible to conclude that any greater similarity in
musical taste between identical twins than non-identical twins is due
to genetic influences.

Budapest, Hungary – Pannon, T-Mobile and Nokia announced today that they will bring Nokia Messaging, Nokia’s easy-to-use email service to their customers having Nokia enabled devices in Hungary. From the 1 st November, all Pannon customers and postpaid T-Mobile customers will be able to access the Nokia Messaging push e-mail service, which supports all leading consumer e-mail solutions, such as Ovi Mail, Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail as well as the major local e-mail services, such as Citromail, Indamail and Freemail.

“In today’s world, access is of key importance – not only the access to information but also the access to each other. Mobile phones pose an obvious solution to keep in touch with each other, and the combination of a handset and an e-mail solution is perfectly in line with Pannon’s goals to offer services to our customers that make their lives easier” – said Gergely Laczkó Tóth, acting CMO of Pannon.

“T-Mobile offers numerous solutions for the ever more popular mobile phone based messaging to its customers, and the offer may become even more complete by introducing NokiaMessaging, as subscribers can pick the solutions best matching their needs. Subscribers increasingly expect the capability to make telephone calls, internet connections and watch TV anytime and anywhere – to have the freedom of accessing information or entertain themselves. Jointly with our partners – e.g. the market leader mobile phone manufacturer Nokia – we wish to fully meet these expectations, building upon our internationally acknowledged, excellent quality network” – said János Winkler, Head of T-Mobile in Hungary, COO Magyar Telekom.

“We are pleased to make this announcement simultaneously with Pannon and T-Mobile. Nokia aims to make mobile e-mail available for as many people as possible; therefore the fact that two Hungarian operators offer Nokia Messaging is an important milestone. With Nokia Messaging, we can meet the need of people to access their public e-mail whenever they want, wherever they want” – said Marcus Störkel, Country Manager for Nokia in Hungary.

Nokia Messaging is an easy to set-up and easy to use push email service which allows the user to mobilize up to ten personal e-mail accounts on one device. With Nokia Messaging, people get the benefit of real time messaging and are able to read, send, forward and reply to emails, view subfolders, download and read attachments and also attach files to emails in real time. Using the push e-mail technology e-mail is swiftly and automatically sent to the mobile phone, without needing to retrieve it. Many users want to enjoy the flexibility of different accounts for each of their communities.

The Nokia Messaging service can be tested for 30 days free of charge. Following the test period it will be available for a monthly charge. Users can initiate the activation of the service at the customer service of their mobile operator. The service can be used with Nokia E52, E66, E72, E71 and N97 mobile phones.

Further information about Nokia Messaging is available on the site of Nokia at http://email.nokia.com as well as on the websites of the operators (www.pannon.hu and www.t-mobile.hu)

Espoo, Finland – The shipments of the Nokia N900, Nokia’s latest mobile computer based on open source Maemo 5 software, have now started. The Nokia N900 will be available in retail stores in November with an estimated retail price of EUR 500, excluding sales taxes and subsidies.

“The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device preorders,” says José-Luis Martinez, Vice President, Nseries, Nokia. “What’s exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience like no other handset. We believe the Nokia N900 will be a very compelling device for people who are passionate about technology.”

At the heart of the Nokia N900 is its powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor and up to 1GB of total application memory. Users can browse the internet the way they would on any computer and keep dozens of application windows open simultaneously on the dashboard. The panoramic desktops in the Nokia N900 can be personalized with widgets, contacts and shortcuts. Pictures and videos taken with the 5Mpx Carl Zeiss camera automatically show where they were taken, and users can add their own description tags to make searching the photos even easier. SMS and instant messages are organized as chat flow and people can convenienty switch between the multiple conversation windows. The built-in 32 GB storage is big enough to store up to 7,000 songs or 40 hours of DVD-quality video, and it can be expanded up to 48GB with an external microSD card.

Nokia works closely with the developer community and has recently seen significant innovation happening with Maemo. As a result, people will be able to discover a wide range of games, utilities, themes, panoramic wallpapers and service plug-ins for photo-sharing and messaging for the Nokia N900 through Ovi Store and Maemo Select, starting later in the year. In October Nokia announced official Qt port to Maemo 5. This means developers can use Qt software to target the Nokia N900 and that applications can be easily ported to all Qt’s supported platforms including the next Maemo 6 release as well as Symbian.

The Nokia N900 will initially be available in Europe, Middle-East, Russia and North America. It is also possible to order the device from the Nokia Online Store: http://europe.nokia.com/buy-online

Helsinki, Finland – The Nokia Foundation has granted its 2009 award to Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, the free, multilingual encyclopedia. Wales was awarded for his contributions to the evolution of the World Wide Web as a participatory and truly democratic platform.

The EUR 10,000 award was presented at the Nokia Foundation scholarship awards ceremony on 4 November, 2009.

“It’s a great honor to present this award on behalf of the Board of the Nokia Foundation to an individual who we believe has made a unique contribution to accelerating online collaboration and interaction for millions of people around the world, and effectively democratizing information sharing,” said Henry Tirri, head of Nokia Research Center and Chairman of the Board of the Nokia Foundation.

“The theme for this year’s award is Open Innovation, a way of working which is very important for our activities at Nokia Research Center, and a value which we believe is embodied in the participatory and inclusive approach of Wikipedia,” he continued.

Since its creation in 2001, Wikipedia has grown rapidly into one of the largest reference web sites, so far attracting an average of more than 330 million monthly visitors this year. There are more than 75,000 active contributors working on more than 14,000,000 articles in more than 260 languages. Wales is also the co-founder of Wikia.com, a project which expands the participatory editing model into new areas, allowing the global community to come together to build the “rest of the library”.

Previous recipients of the Nokia Foundation annual award include Lauri Kuokkanen (1995), Pekka Tarjanne (1996), Linus Torvalds (1997), Arto Salomaa (1998), Kullervo Nieminen (1999), Osmo A. Wiio (2000), Ilkka Haikala (2001), Veikko Rintamäki (2002), George Metakides (2003), Heikki Lyytinen (2004), Moncef Gabbouj (2005), Mårten Mickos (2006), Pekka Abrahamsson (2007), Aapo Kyrölä and Sampo Karjalainen (2008).

This year, the Nokia Foundation also awarded 77 scholarships with a total value of EUR 385,000. All 77 scholarships were granted to post-graduate students to support the completion of their doctorate studies in the field of information and data communications technology.

About the Nokia Foundation

The Nokia Foundation was formed in 1995 to support the scientific development of information and telecommunications technologies and to promote education of the sector in Finland. Multidisciplinary research that bridges approaches from other fields, like social, behavioral, business and services sciences, is highly valued by Nokia.

The Nokia Foundation provides scholarships and awards for the purposes mentioned above. Decisions are made by the board of the Foundation, which consists of four representatives from Finnish universities and three representatives of Nokia.

Established on the initiative of Nokia, the Nokia Foundation was entered in the Finnish foundation registry in August 1995. Nokia Foundation is not part of Nokia Corporation and its mandate is limited to granting funds in line with the foundation’s mission.
